INTERFAITH MEMORIAL SERVICES PLANNED TO COMMEMORATE
DANIEL PEARL ON THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF HIS TRAGIC
DEATH Memorials Planned in Major Cities; People of All Faiths
Invited to Conduct and Attend Services February 20-23
in Show of Solidarity Against Terror and Prejudice
Los Angeles, January 22, 2003 - One year ago,
on January 23, 2002, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel
Pearl was kidnapped while on assignment in Karachi,
Pakistan. On February 21, the world learned of his
senseless and violent murder at the hands of terrorists.
Now, on the anniversary of his tragic loss, friends
and family of Daniel Pearl invite people of all faiths
to join them in remembrance by conducting and participating
in interfaith memorial services during the period of
February 20-23, in a show of solidarity against terror
and intolerance.
Keynote memorial services are being planned in several
major cities, including Los Angeles, New York, Toronto,
and Jerusalem. The services will remember and honor
Daniel Pearl as a Jew, a citizen of the world, and
a creator of dialogue, while condemning the madness
of his murder and seeking to help restore sanity and
humanity to the world.
"We are convinced that our world will be strengthened
and more secure when people of courage and goodwill
stand together in solidarity to bear witness against
terror and the anti-Semitic prejudice that killed our
son," said Dr. Judea Pearl, Daniel's father and
President of the Daniel Pearl Foundation. "By
bringing together people of different beliefs, building
trust, and uniting them in a common stand for humanity,
Daniel's life - and even his untimely death - will
make a difference."
Dr. Pearl will participate in services led by rabbis
and other religious and civic leaders at the Museum
of Tolerance in Los Angeles, at Temple B'nai Jeshurun
in New York, and at Temple Beth Tzedec in Toronto.
Additionally, the Jerusalem Foundation will conduct
a multi-denomination service in Jerusalem at Mishkenot
Sha'ananim on Saturday, February 22.
Additional information can be found at the Daniel
Pearl Foundation web site (www.danielpearl.org).
Based in Los Angeles, The Daniel Pearl Foundation
was founded last year by Daniel's family and friends
with the mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding
and tolerance through journalism, music, and innovative
communications.
